Cowboys trade for Texans WR Brandin Cooks
Dallas, Texas The Dallas Cowboys acquired Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks on Sunday in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. The team wanted to add speed and a complement to Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb.
The deal for Cooks likely pulls the Cowboys out of the competition for free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., a team source told ESPN's Ed Werder.
Cooks and OBJ are challenging, the insider said.
Before to the trade deadline in 2017, talks between the Cowboys and Texans centred on a move for Cooks, but they were unable to reach an agreement.
Cooks will have a guaranteed $18 million salary in 2023. According to sources who spoke with ESPN, Cooks adjusted his contract on Saturday such that Houston will cover $6 million of his salary this season and Dallas will cover the remaining $12 million. He has a deal with the company until 2024.
"I feel incredibly blessed and can't wait to go make the star feel special! I'm grateful to the Jones family for providing my family and I with this chance "Cooks texted ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime with the following statement.
The Cowboys only signed veteran James Washington in free agency after trading Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round pick the previous year.
